Grilled Chicken with Spicy Coconut Sauce (Bumbu Rujak)

If you’re bored with your grilled chicken, try this #IndonesianRecipe called Ayam Bakar Bumbu Rujak (Grilled Chicken with Spicy Coconut Sauce). The ingredients are easy to get. It’s smells good and definitely delicious. Give it a try.


– 1kg chicken or 1 whole chicken
– 1/2 key lime (jeruk nipis) and squeeze the juice
– salt to taste
– 200 ml coconut milk (santan)
– 2 bay leaves ( daun salam)
– 5 key lime leaves (daun jeruk)
– 2 lemongrass (sereh), smashed.
– 5 tbs oil to stir fry the ground spices.

Ground these spices :
– 7 red chilly
– 10 shallots (bawang merah)
– 5 garlic ( bawang putih)
– 4 candlenuts (kemiri)
– 1 tomato, seedless
– 2cm galangal(lengkuas) , sliced thinly
– 1/2 tsp ground coriander (ketumbar bubuk)
– 1 tsp shrimp paste ( terasi)
– 1 tbs brown sugar ( gula merah)
– 1 tbs tamarind water (asam jawa)
– salt and sugar to taste

How to :
Grilled chicken in the oven half cooked.
Sauté ground spices , bay leaves, lemongrass, key lime leaves in hot oil till aromatic.
(Tumis bumbu halus, sereh, daun salam dan daun jeruk sampai wangi.)

Put the chicken in. Add coconut milk, brown sugar, tamarind water. Cook till the water thicken.

Take the chicken out and grilled.
