Garam Masala Ingredients

Garam masala (from Hindi: गरम मसाला, garam (“hot”) and masala (a mixture of spices)) is a blend of ground spices common in North Indian and other South Asian cuisines.[1] It is used alone or with other seasonings. The word garam refers to “heat” in the Ayurvedic sense of the word, meaning “to heat the body” as these spices, in the Ayurvedic system of medicine, elevate body temperature.

I made Chana Masala the other day and one of the ingredients was Garam Masala. I couldn’t find it in the supermarket, so i made my own. You can use whole spices and grind them on coffee grinder or just buy ground spices and mix them. I use ground spices, except for the green cardamom (kapol india), since i couldn’t find the ground one, (thank god) i found whole cardamom. I peeled the skin and you will find black little seeds. Grind those seeds using mortar and pestle.


1 tbs ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
1 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg


Mix cumin, coriander, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in a bowl. Place mix in an airtight container, and store in a cool, dry place.
